Since its conception in 2007, Korea Model United Nations has progressively led the MUN conferences in Korea, and has kept the integrity of its motto “Tradition of Excellence.” The secretariat that has successfully evolved KMUN into the leading MUN conference is now opening the first Model G20 conference with the co-host YTN, to commemorate the upcoming 2010 G20 summit in Republic of Korea.

G20 or The Group of Twenty is a relatively new function, where twenty major economies gather to discuss the issues that are critical for the welfare of global society. The vast importance and its influence have led the G20 to overshadow the G8 and the G7, and it is now considered the crown jewel of global cooperation. By promoting open and constructive discussions between industrialized and emerging-market countries, the G20 strengthens the international financial architecture and provides opportunities for dialogue on national policies and international cooperation. The G20 includes many committees that pertain mostly to global financial and economical issues, and has the G20 Summit represented by the heads of states. The issues covered within G20 are challenging to resolve yet rewarding, because the effects of declarations proposed make a global impact.

This year’s Model G20 conference is the beginning of a new era, where high school and college students interested in global forums can actively participate and learn the intricacies of international cooperation. Each student can use his/her or her creativity and understanding of his/her assigned country’s agenda to diplomatically create a declaration that may augment the progress of the world. The G20 is a very successful forum where the voices of nations are heard, and there is no doubt that Korea Model G20: KMUN Special Session will offer the same opportunities for the participating students.
